Last week, I had an opportunity to give a lecture to Tokyo’s Ochanomizu University students. I enjoy giving talks/lectures, but this was my first ever Zoom lecture. Thankfully, it went well. I realized the students were using Zoom chats to ask questions during the lecture. I believe I received more questions than I’ve received from a regular lecture. Experiencing things first hand might not always be the best and the only answer. Maybe the same can be said for traveling. Traveling via a stuffed animal could give you something that you can’t get from a regular travel. It’s not a matter of which is better, but rather that each brings different value.
先週、お茶の水女子大学の学生さん達に講義をする機会を頂きました。このような機会に恵まれると楽しんでお話をしますが、今回は初のZoom（オンライン）での講義でした。私が話している間に学生さん達はZoomのチャット機能を使って質問を送信し、無駄な緊張がなかったからか、嬉しい事に（驚く事に）いつもの対面での講義以上に活発に質問が出ていたような気がしました。リアルに何かを経験するという事が常に唯一正しい方法ではない。旅行もぬいぐるみを介するとリアルの旅行では得られない違う価値が得られるのと同じように大学の講義も対面、オンラインどちらかがいいか悪いかではなく、それぞれ違う価値をもたらす事を実感するZoom講義になりました。
